If you're going to a barbecue, eating healthy won't be easy. Who can resist mayonnaise-soaked potato salad and fruit desserts served al fresco? But even if you manage to resist the temptation of these barbeque regulars, you definitely won't be able to resist the main course. So, hot dogs and hamburgers are served on the table, and you need to choose one thing. But which of these foods is healthier? It's time to unravel this mystery and find out what choices you should make the next time you're at a BBQ party.

Important aspects of a serious choice

Experienced nutritionist Amy Margulis shares her thoughts on which of these two popular BBQ dishes is the least detrimental to a healthy diet. She noted that there are several aspects that deserve special attention. Naturally, the key aspect is the calorie content of foods, but you can’t look only at the energy value of foods.

Why are hot dogs better?

If you're worried about calories, you should opt for a hot dog. “In most cases, hot dogs contain significantly fewer calories,” said Margulis. “In the worst case, they will contain about two hundred calories, and if you make a smarter choice, you can limit yourself to 120 calories, and some hot dogs can even contain less than a hundred calories. If we talk about hamburgers, then there are at least 250 calories per serving. Thus, in this category, hot dogs definitely win.

healthy burgers

She noted that turkey burgers and veggie burgers can be significantly lower in calories, but even then there is always the possibility that you will overdo it with additives and sauces. The fact is that hot dogs in most cases are a bun and a sausage with the addition of some kind of sauce, while a hamburger is a complex dish that can include more than ten components, and not all of them will differ in their outstanding usefulness.

Incredible calorie content and how to level it

“An average beef patty burger will contain about three hundred calories, a bun and a slice of cheese add another 150 and 80 calories, respectively,” she explained. “If you add mayonnaise, that's another ninety calories, and suddenly you have over 600 calories in your hamburger. And that’s without salads and other side dishes.” Margulis came up with a workable solution: you can forgo the buns and opt for either mayonnaise or cheese, but never both. The more ingredients in your hamburger, the higher its energy value, and this is exactly what you should avoid. Therefore, the simpler your dish, the better it will be for your diet.

Who cooked the hamburgers?

It's also worth noting that the problem with burgers (even turkey ones) is that you don't have a clue how they're made (unless you host the party and cook them yourself, of course). “People often add extra fat, choose the fattest cuts of meat,” she said. “But they can also choose the leanest meat. As a result, you can make a difference of hundreds of calories from the meat itself.” This may actually come as a surprise because hamburgers are usually seen as a classic dish that is always the same. But in fact, this is not the case, and the result very much depends on who and how prepared the hamburgers for the barbecue.

The terrible secret of hot dogs

However, there is a secret about hot dogs that you also need to take into account. Depending on the brand, hot dogs can contain incredibly high amounts of sodium. In addition, some of them may be significantly more processed than others. “Hot dogs have a wide variety of additives,” Margulis said. "You can never know for sure what exactly you will get as a result." The more processed the product is, the more it contains a variety of harmful additives, so you need to be extremely careful when choosing hot dogs.

Smart product selection

At best, you should know the brand of the hot dogs you're buying - then you'll have some idea of both the taste and what's in a particular product. If you don't have a favorite brand, the first thing you should do is cut out those hot dogs that contain more than six grams of saturated fat. Saturated fats are known to be one of the main adversaries of human health and one of the leading causes of the obesity epidemic. Therefore, the fewer of them in your hot dog, the better.

How to make a hamburger less harmful?

If you still decide to opt for a hamburger, there are various healthy supplements that you can use. For example, you can add as many vegetables as possible to it. For example, you can add grilled bell peppers to a hamburger. Lettuce, tomatoes and onions are also excellent choices. Also, you can always go the unconventional route, cut up your patty and eat it with a salad. Recently, hamburgers are gaining special popularity, in which green salad leaves are used instead of buns. This is a very fashionable and original solution, so you can eat less and positively stand out from the rest at the same time.

At a party you can behave accordingly

However, it is worth noting that, in the end, this choice is not so vital. "If you're out for a barbecue, remember that this is a party, not a daily routine," Margulis said. “So you can choose what you like, because the next day you will already be back to your standard diet and you may regret that even at the barbecue they still tried to adhere to any restrictions.” As numerous scientific studies have shown, if you constantly limit yourself in everything, this can lead to a sad result. Therefore, if you are at a barbecue, you can afford to relax and eat exactly what you most want.

Own BBQ Party

However, if you're throwing a BBQ party yourself, or just cooking for your family, why not make an informed choice and cook something that's both tasty and healthy so that no one has to choose or suffer a guilty conscience. At home, you can always have 100% control over the process, so there are no unexpected unwanted ingredients in your products. In your own kitchen, you can always cook both healthy hamburgers and harmless hot dogs. Use natural ingredients, a minimum of additives, control portions, and then you will not need to think about what to eat - a hamburger or a hot dog, because they are so harmful, and you should never take both. You can eat whatever you want without remorse, as you will know one hundred percent what is in the dishes served, how many calories they contain, and how harmful or healthy they are. Thus, your own homemade BBQ party will bring the entire family pure pleasure. No harm and absolutely no remorse!

For cooking we need:

After carefully sifting the flour, combine it with yeast, sugar and salt.

We add warm (38–40 degrees) water or milk to the dry ingredients, followed by beaten eggs, honey, room temperature butter and grated boiled potatoes. The latter should not be hot, otherwise the high temperature may adversely affect the activity of the yeast.

Mix all the ingredients together for a couple of minutes. The finished dough is sticky and soft.

We take a container of greater depth or diameter, grease its bottom and walls with vegetable oil, and then place the potato dough in it.

Cover the bowl with cling film and leave warm for 2 hours or until doubled in size. In the end, something like this will happen.

Now divide the dough into portions. The size of the latter is limited only by your desire, but we recommend stopping at the golden mean: for a burger it is 140 grams, and for a hot dog - 120 grams (about 10 centimeters long). We form buns, lay them out on a baking sheet covered with parchment, leave for another hour and let them come up a second time.

Lubricate the buns with beaten egg yolk and put in an oven preheated to 180 degrees for 12 minutes.

After we grease them with melted butter and return to the oven for a similar time. Then another batch of bun butter, and you're done!

  3. Knead the dough for 1-2 minutes, transfer to a greased bowl and leave to rise warm until doubled in size (about 2 hours).
  4. We divide the risen dough into portions (120 and 140 grams for hot dogs and burgers, respectively) and form. We leave the buns to rise a second time for another hour.
  5. Lubricate homemade buns with beaten yolk and put in an oven preheated to 180 degrees for 12 minutes. We take out a baking sheet, cover the buns with a layer of melted butter and set to bake for another 12 minutes. Additionally, grease the buns with oil after removing from the oven.
